"I seek to make jewellery that is well crafted, striking and elegant. I believe that the piece should have its own presence, but that it should also work harmoniously with the wearer and not compete with their identity.
Movement is something I try to incorporate into my designs, and often I like to introduce colour in some way. I tend to create bold but delicate jewellery that has a sense of fluidity in the form.
Through the process of making, I become very connected with the piece, and enjoy the discipline and focus of working by hand.
I find the idea that my work will take on new meanings and histories of the wearer very satisfying, and thus it evolves from being something merely decorative, to being something more enduring."
Melanie Katsalidis is one of the artists who has a studio at the Pieces of Eight
