"The coral parure evolved from an investigation into materiality, using 'the branch' as a metaphor for growth and decay, strength and fragility.
The first piece, a necklace made from small plastic screw tops, turned into coral beads simply by association with the colour red. I soon realized that colour could override form and saw 'coral' growing in front of my eyes.
The parure (from French parer, 'to adorn') is a set or suite of jewellery pieces, which traditionally consisted of a tiara or diadem, long and short necklaces, earrings, brooches, bracelets and rings. Historic examples from the early 19th century (Castellani) were elaborately displayed in tiered boxes, visually fusing individual pieces into a new, theatrical shape.
The concept of the parure, contrary to current aesthetics, allows the interpretation of jewellery as playful embellishment. I have attempted to give that concept a contemporary context."
