"
The morning ritual of watching Jim across the table rolling a ring around his right middle finger is burnt into my brain. The radio was always just a little too loud for that time of morning and with every turn of the gold signet ring a pink diamond was revealed underneath for a split second.
This was when Jim did his scheming. When the thoughts were processed he would complete one rotation in the opposite direction, tap the ring twice on the table, smile at me and leave. I saw him by chance recently and noticed as we shook hands that he still wore the ring and it was wearing down slightly on one edge."
