/ November's Golden Birthstone: Citrine /

The birthstone for November is the citrine, a sunny, golden-hued gem from the quartz family. Incredibly rare, most citrine on the market is actually amethyst which has been heat treated to create a yellow colour.

While supply was sparse for many decades, citrine enjoyed a boom in the Art Deco period when newly sourced rough material from Brazil and Uruguay was sent by expatriate gem cutters back to Idar Oberstein in Germany. It became more accessible recently when the ability to heat treat was discovered, making this yellow toned gem more readily available.
