An Exhibition of Contemporary Jewellery
November 10 - December 2, 2006

On the menu this November at Pieces of Eight is Lucy Folk’s ‘Nibbles’, a delicious exhibition of contemporary jewellery which is bound to whet your appetite. It is an exhibition which celebrates the joy and unexpected beauty of food, in particular tasty little offerings you will want to wear rather than consume. Known amongst her friends as being a bit of a foodie, Folk has created a series of beautifully made and playful wearable works. They will make you smile and possibly even fall in love with the delicious forms and tasty textures.

Lucy Folk is an artist who revels in applying folk art techniques to her work. In ‘Nibbles’, she utilises methods of making such as whittling, carving and crochet, frequently incorporating bright colours. There is a deliberate naivety in Folk’s works. Her aim not to replicate food, but to trigger memories of eating experiences. Folk also celebrates the ritual of eating and preparing food with a series of screen-printed linen tea towels and napkins, available in limited editions.

The jewellery is joyful, sometimes a little tongue in cheek, and always beautifully executed. These are guilt-free treats, created by a self confessed lover of all things delicious. The gold plated Burger Rings evoke childhood memories of wearing these high calorie treats on one’s fingers, a common experience for many Aussie kids. For those who are careful to maintain a balanced diet, there are neckpieces created from brightly painted sticks of celery and plump olives carved from jelutong wood. Silver repousse sardines sit with the perfect accompaniment of timber bruschetta and cherry tomatoes. What more could an art glutton wish for?

Consumer Warning: Viewing ‘Nibbles’ on an empty stomach may result in tummy grumbles and mouth-watering. Please note that although they appear most scrumptious, the artist recommends wearing the works rather than eating them. Plus, they’ll last longer this way.

Lucy Folk is a Melbourne based artist who studied Gold and Silversmithing at RMIT University in the same city, graduating in 2003. Folk annually creates the jewellery collection for fashion label Arabella Ramsay. She has a studio space in the Pieces of Eight workshop and this is her first solo exhibition..
