Who: David Parker
What: Sapphire ring
"I wanted to make something that worked with all the colours of a saphire, from dark to light. I wanted to capture the shades - all those gradients of colour. The sapphire is a remarkable; very durable and prestigious.
I suppose a lot of my work is contemporary. I like the idea of my work standing out as a strong, modern piece. A lot of thought and planning goes into each piece I make. I do a lot of sketching, to work out proportions and dimensions.
I really enjoy working on private commissions for design-minded people. I think people like the idea of having something made especially for them - it can add a whole other dimension to the work. I really enjoy working with couples when I'm creating something like an engagement ring; something that will remain significant to them for years to come. These days, everything is made in tremendous volumes, it's refreshing to have a piece of jewellery that is unique."

David Parker's jewellery is available from Pieces of Eight.
