 Trouble
November, 2006
Nibble on gold nuts, burger rings, pop glam and nacho bling! Lucy Folk is a Melbourne based artist who studied Gold and Silversmithing at RMIT University. Graduating in 2003, she is holding her first solo exhibition Nibbles, at Pieces of Eight gallery in North Fitzroy.
While many contemporary jewelers are influenced by nature and organic
forms, Folk is inspired by one of her greatest loves in life - food. Be it a silver
macaroni necklace or bruschetta carved in soft and sculptural jelutong wood,
she finds an attraction to the wearable edible.
The idea of snacks being deliciously naughty is presented in Folk’s individual
pieces. Food stuff such as peanuts and chips have been electroformed, or
plated in copper, and then coated in twenty four carat gold and sterling silver.
The result is a tempting array of earrings, necklaces and rings.
Moving away from a purely decorative function, contemporary jewellery has
developed new interpretations of structure and sculptural form. Folk has said
that she likes to apply ‘folk’ techniques to her work including crochet, whittling,
bright colours and whimsy. The exhibition will be a sumptuous affair.
