 The Program
November 21, 2006
Lucy Folk is a jeweller who likes to eat. That’s why her new exhibition at Pieces of Eight is a smorgasbord of wearable treats. Her mouth watering exhibition is called Nibbles and offers up a picnic spread of delicious food, all beautifully inedible.
Lucy says, "I’ve worked with pretzels which I’ve had gold plated, so there’s a real pretzel covered in a fine layer of copper and then 24 carat gold. I’ve made sardines out of silver which I’ve made using a technique called repousse and I’ve made celery bangles and carrot sticks and French fries and crocheted little snags like little hot dogs, onion rings and calamari, just kind of everything." The result is an exhibition of sparkling indulgence. Fat gold pretzels are displayed alongside shining peanuts and carved crackers, chocolate and knitted gelati.
Making the metallic pieces out of foods with different textures and strengths meant Lucy had to find the right technique to suit each one. The porous nature of her materials meant that each needed to be "cooked" according to their own recipe. She says "With the burger rings I sent them off to this place that specialises in electroplating unusual things. They put it in to wax and then it’s coated in a special paint that the metal adheres to. So it’s coated in the metal and then with the metal I can’t really heat it up very much because it’s really delicate so I've just used it combined with wood and other things."
For Lucy, Nibbles is all about enjoying what you’re wearing. She says, "I wanted to make some work that was just fun and so people can laugh when they’re wearing a piece and it’s just a bit exciting and different and tongue in cheek."
