Introducing: DANIEL EMMA Stripe Vases

Just in time for Mother’s Day, Pieces of Eight welcomes a strikingly colourful collection of vases by dynamic design studio DANIEL EMMA. The Daniel Emma Stripe Vases are made from 14 individually crafted bioplastic segments, each in a different colour, coming together to form a bold and vibrant structural stripe. Perfect for any tablescape, these playful pieces can be displayed solo or grouped to show off your favourite blooms in style.

We spoke to designers, Daniel To & Emma Aiston to learn more about their process.

PO8: Daniel Emma has such a distinctive visual language—playful yet refined. How has your aesthetic evolved over the years?

D-E: Our designs are inspired by everyday life in Adelaide, the vibrant colours and material combinations found in cities like Hong Kong and Tokyo, and the timeless appeal of iconic silhouettes. We love exploring contrasts in colour, texture, and materials across all our projects. Over time our design language has evolved to include new experiences and memories but in essence remains relatively unchanged, we just have more magic to draw influence from!

PO8:  Let’s talk about your new Stripe Vase series—can you share the inspiration behind the collection and speak to the design and making process—materials, form, and colour choices?

D-E: Put simply, we love stripes! We have been exploring how to create striped objects for some time now. Our goal was to make stripes in our own way, not by painting them, but by constructing each colour as a distinct, separate part.  This has been a process spanning several years, as we searched for the right form and a low volume production method that felt true to our vision. Last year, we started experimenting with a 3D printer. Through a lot of trial and error, we discovered a method that achieves the balance we were looking for. It is a slow process, printing one small vase takes around seven hours, but it is worth it. Today, we are excited to share our first full range of striped vases. They come in a few different colour combinations and sizes, each a result of this meticulous process. It is satisfying to see this idea finally take shape.

PO8:  This collection is launching in time for Mother’s Day. Are there any maternal figures in your lives who’ve influenced your creative journey or approach to design?

D-E: Both of our mums are creative in their own ways, and have been equally encouraging towards us as we have pursued a career in design. They are tenacious hand working and strong willed women which has instilled in us the confidence and resilience to never give up!
