Introducing Kerryn Levy: Part 2

In Part 2 of our conversation with artist Kerryn Levy, we delve deeper into the ideas and instincts that guide her practice. From the interplay of form and texture to the emotional resonance of materials, Kerryn shares more about what drives her making—and what might be next.

PO8: Your work often feels both organic and architectural — can you talk us through how  you approach form and texture in your pieces?

KL: My forms are definitely organic, inspired by the natural environment and the human body. I've never considered my work to be architectural but I'm always interested in how it is interpreted by others! Texture and a consistent pattern is formed naturally in the clay by my fingertips as I build and join coils to one another. This pattern follows the form of the piece as it twists and turns. I like to explore different glaze textures, from smooth satins and glossy finishes to dry matte or crater glazes - depending on what is interesting to me in the moment. The colours I am drawn to are usually natural/neutral tones - white, black, grey, green, terracotta, however I've recently been adding more gold, silver and metallic finishes and I have a bright blue that I love using for its rich, vibrant finish.

PO8: Are there any particular ideas or emotions you hope people experience when viewing or holding your work?

KL: I hope my work is calming to look at and brings a sense of peace, joy and connection. I hope objects like my candle holders and simple vases inspire people to create or maintain daily rituals, traditions or cultural practices. I'd like to think some of my pieces might feel like bringing the beauty of the natural world inside the home.

PO8: Is there a material you haven’t worked with yet, but want to?

KL: I'd love to try casting my pieces in metal one day - maybe for a large-scale sculptural installation.

The team at Pieces of Eight Gallery, 28 Russell Place, Melbourne would love to take you through Kerryn's collection in person, or alternatively, you can view her work online
