Sapphires for Spring: Embracing Colour

The sapphire gemstone extends far beyond its signature blue. From delicate pinks and yellows to greens, purples and unexpected hues, discover the remarkable spectrum of this endlessly varied gemstone.

While blue sapphire is the most widely known and most popular colour, new deposits of ‘fancy’ colours discovered in East Africa and Madagascar during the 1990s has ignited new interest in these additional colours. The discovery of sapphire gemstones from these new locations has increased the availability of colours such as yellow, orange, pink and purple.

Most sapphires are cut for colour so they tend to be larger and deeper in cut than white diamonds, giving you more bang for your buck. Scroll down to see some of our current favourites in the gallery.

Do you know an Iron Maiden? This is the ring for them, with yellow sapphires being caused by trace elements of iron forming within the crystal's structure. William Llewellyn Griffiths's stunning Regal Radiance ring showcases a 4.25ct yellow sapphire nestled amongst buttery 18ct yellow gold.

Pink sapphires get their colour primarily from the presence of chromium. Interestingly, this is the same trace element that turns a sapphire red to become a ruby, but it is deposited in smaller amounts.

Purple sapphires get their colour from a combination of chromium and vanadium, sometimes interacting with traces of iron and titanium.

Shimara Carlow's colourful 'Odyssey' creations feature soft pastel pink and lilac sapphires. And there are earrings to match, too!

Julia Storey's Terra's Embrace necklace pairs a uniquely banded Australian blue sapphire with a selection of yellow, orange and teal sapphires.
"It creates a perfect balance between ocean depths and terrestrial landscapes, uniting two distinct natural worlds in one captivating composition."

Suzi Zutic's Landscape earrings feature a string of colourful Australian sapphires, suspended upon a simple golden wire.Melanie Katsalidis embraces the full spectrum of colour with this fun stack of her Rainbow XO, Everlasting Rainbow and Fever Rainbow Sapphire rings.
