Natural vs. Lab-Grown: Our Position on Diamond Provenance

Why Pieces of Eight Chooses Natural Diamonds

At Pieces of Eight, our material choices are guided by design integrity, longevity, and respect for provenance. Our jewellery is created to last, and the materials we use align with that purpose. For this reason, we choose natural diamonds, such as those set in Karla Way's natural white and champagne diamond Deep Earth Time Ring ring, above.

A Connection to Deep Time: What Makes Natural Diamonds Distinct

Overwhelmingly, our clients value pieces with genuine character and a clear sense of origin. Each natural diamond forms over billions of years, developing individual inclusions and growth patterns. These nuances give each stone personality and make every diamond truly one of a kind. As a finite natural resource, a diamond’s value is closely connected to its place of origin. This provenance can enhance both its rarity and its lasting personal significance.

Lab-Grown Diamonds: Similar Structure, Different Qualities

Lab-grown diamonds certainly have a place in the market, and though their accessibility appeals to many buyers, there are important distinctions to understand.

Because they are created in highly controlled conditions, lab-grown diamonds tend to be visually consistent, resulting in a uniformity that lacks the natural variations and character found in Earth-formed stones. Their value has also declined rapidly in recent years and is expected to continue falling, which affects their suitability for clients seeking materials with long-term or heirloom value. Additionally, while they are often promoted as the environmentally responsible option, their sustainability profile is far from straightforward: production requires significant energy, often from non-renewable sources, and environmental claims can vary widely between facilities.

Natural Diamonds and Responsible Sourcing

Choosing natural diamonds does not mean compromising on ethics. We work only with suppliers who meet strict standards for traceability, transparency and responsible mining practices, including Kimberley Process compliance.

Ethically responsible natural diamonds support regulated employment and community initiatives, offering a clear and accountable supply chain. We also love the unique natural colours available, varying from a pale straw yellow to dark cognac colours to black.

A good example of a natural champagne diamond can be seen in William Llewellyn Griffiths' Diamond and Skulls Victorian Gothic Ring, above. We also celebrate the natural carbon inclusions which make Salt and Pepper diamonds so beautiful, like Melanie Katsalidis'  Affection Salt & Pepper Diamond Love Ritual Ring, below.

The Pieces of Eight Approach

Our jewellery is made to be loved, worn and passed on as future heirlooms. Natural diamonds, with their rarity, individuality and long-term value, fit with our commitment to meaningful, enduring design. While lab-grown diamonds serve certain needs, natural diamonds offer the provenance and unique character that inspire us and best align with the creative work we do.
