Beneath a celestial sky: bespoke wedding ring commission

It’s always my greatest pleasure to make something as special as an engagement ring and wedding bands for a couple, and when they are my dearest friends, my joy is magnified! This couple has generously shared the story behind their bespoke rings with us here.

“The concept [behind the engagement ring] is very personal,” they say, “linked to a moment in time when we were travelling, sitting on the edge of a cliff on a volcanic island surrounded by horizon and sky. The rings reflect a moment in time that combines this idea of two people sitting under a celestial sky.”

The gem selection was key to encapsulating this very personal brief. The white diamond acts as a horizon and earth with the round ruby suspended above.

The wedding bands by contrast are simple and “don’t shout ‘married!’ too loud”. “They are representative of the two of us,” says the couple, “but are not part of an aesthetic”. Their value and meaning remains private.

“It was very special to work with such a close friend on a piece that is more than jewellery,” says the couple. “Mel knows us both so well. Her approach is so accommodating yet confident, her knowledge and experience really brought the concept to life.

“The outcomes are beautiful, classic, different and one-off – all things that were central to the brief. We are connected to the rings through their meaning and through the process of creating them with Mel.”

To see these dear friends and clients wearing the engagement ring and wedding bands makes me so happy. To create these intimate personal objects that carry so many meanings and memories is incredibly fulfilling – and really sums up the beauty of jewellery for me.
