The Devil's in the Detail
William Llewellyn Griffiths
May 12 - June 11, 2023
Have you ever visited Europe and been captivated by its Gothic spires and cobbled laneways? William Llewellyn Griffiths certainly was. After taking his treasures to Milan Jewellery Week in 2022, he returned to Australia brimming with inspiration for his next creations. Visits to Milan, Florence and Venice infused William with new ideas, allowing him to cast a glamour upon the latent lustre of precious stones and metals.
William's latest couture designs draw upon the enduring allure of medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and Gothic architecture and art. He forges an alchemy between these inspirations, utilising traditional craftsmanship and modern innovation. His passion for artisanal techniques such as goldsmithing and lost wax casting began 45 years ago on Jeweller's Row in London's Hatton Garden and continues today in his studio overlooking St. Paul's Cathedral in Melbourne, Australia. William also explores cutting-edge CAD and 3D printing methods, creating pieces that are both traditional and contemporary.
William's jewellery tells stories that channel monarchs, myths, and romantic legends. His pieces are overtly theatrical yet covertly functional, with mechanical components, hidden compartments, and a manipulation of proportions that mediate narrative and nostalgia. His covetable designs entirely eschew trends, making them timeless pieces that will be cherished for years to come.
