A Love Less Ordinary: Redefining the Engagement Ring

Once bound by tradition, the engagement ring has undergone a quiet transformation. While a classic solitaire, set on a simple band of gold remains an icon, it is no longer the only expression of enduring love. For today’s couples, individuality, storytelling and design take centre stage.

Modern settings are at the heart of this evolution. Sculptural, architectural, minimal or bold, contemporary rings are as much about form as they are about feeling. Think asymmetric arrangements, floating stones, unusual orientations and unexpected textures. These designs honour the gemstone while creating space for personality and creative expression.

We see many couples turning towards distinctive stones such as Australian sapphires, and less traditional, but equally beautiful, champagne and salt and pepper diamonds, each chosen for their character, origin and symbolism. It is a shift from perfection to authenticity, from convention to meaning.

At the same time, there is a growing desire to honour what already exists. Repurposing heirloom pieces into a new engagement ring allows history to be carried forward in a deeply personal way. A grandmother’s diamond, an inherited band, or a sentimental gemstone can be thoughtfully reimagined into a contemporary design that reflects the wearer today. Rather than leaving treasured pieces unworn, couples are choosing to redesign them, preserving their story while giving them new life. The result is a ring that bridges generations, where memory and modernity meet in a single, meaningful piece.

Another noticeable shift, finds engagement jewellery no longer reserved for one partner alone. Increasingly, both partners are choosing to wear an engagement ring or symbolic piece of their own, whether that takes the form of a signet, a sculptural band, or a custom design that reflects their personal style. This evolution speaks to a more expansive and expressive approach to commitment, where each person is invited to mark the moment in a way that feels authentic to them.

Importantly, the process has also changed. Instead of surprise proposals, many couples now opt to co-design their rings, creating something intentional and collaborative, resulting in a beautiful heirloom that reflects the two people shaping a future together. Love today is complex, conscious and deeply personal. The rings that symbolise it should be, too.

We asked Pieces of Eight's Retail Manager, Hannah Chambers, and sales associates, Tilda Cole and Georgia Puttock, to share some of their favourite modern engagement rings from the gallery's collection. What's your favourite?

Hannah's selection:

Everything Argyle Ring by Kim Victoria

"So comfortable to wear, with the diamond low to the hand and bezel set".

Patricia & Michel Ring by Tessa Blazey

"This ring is such a great exploration of the diversity of diamonds. There's so much more to them than your traditional white diamond".

Tilda's Selection:

Wild Spirit Champagne Diamond Ring by Julia Storey

"A contemporary design with all of the elements of a traditional heirloom-worthy engagement ring. Housed in 18ct yellow gold, this ring sparkles with a generous sprinkling of smaller diamonds scattered around the central stone".

Winter Solstice Ring by Amy Renshaw

"The Winter Solstice ring is playful adaptation of a traditional trilogy design. I love the moody grey of the central spinel, enhanced by it's diamond counterparts. Spinels are a wonderful alternative to a traditional diamond or sapphire stone due to their exceptional durability and intense sparkle".

Georgia's Selection:

Kite Diamond Elevate Halo Ring by Melanie Katsalidis

“There’s something almost spellbinding about this ring. The kite diamond, haloed by brilliant cut diamonds, catches the light in the most mesmerising way, and the crisp, clean lines have a strength that in no way detracts from the romance of this ring. Though white diamonds are a more traditional stone choice for an engagement ring, this piece feels entirely unique”.

Deep Earth Time Ring by Karla Way

This piece by Karla Way, was made for 'Substratum', the gallery's June 2025 group exhibition, celebrating the beauty of Australian gemstones. All the work presented for this exhibition was exceptional, but this ring in particular stood out to me. The champagne diamond flashes gold and blue, and the setting has a trickle of tiny diamonds cascading down the side".
