A Studio Visit with Kim Victoria

We spent a recent morning visiting the Melbourne studio of jewellery artist Kim Victoria, where we chatted all things design, gemstones and Kim's approach to making.

There’s something special about hearing an artist describe their own pieces. The choices behind a form make so much more sense once you’ve stood in the space where they’re made.

Thank you, Kim, for welcoming us in.
Head to our Instagram to watch the full interview here.

PO8: Can you walk us through your wax-carving and casting process, and explain how you capture those irregular, landscape-inspired details in metal?

KV: I make my works in wax, through a method of addition and subtraction. I begin with a base model in wax, and then I carve into it using various tools. I also add more molten wax and work it until I am happy with the final form and textures.

PO8: What is the creative dialogue between your initial sketches or inspirations and the final, three-dimensional form?

KV: I often start with a stone from my collection, and build a hand-drawn sketch around that gemstone. I then transfer that drawing into a CAD program, where I can flesh out the details and dimensions of the piece.

All of the texture then gets added after I have received the piece in wax, before it is finally cast in molten metal.

Kim's faithful studio assistant, Winnie!
