On Tuesday 28 November, the Pieces of Eight team ventured into a subterranean Fitzroy apartment to experience Familiars, a new exhibition by PO8 represented artist, Michaela Pegum.
Set within an intimate, modern space, the installation transformed the domestic interior into a site of quiet magic, where materials, memory, and sound intertwined. In collaboration with sound artist Ian Moorhead and lighting designer Bosco Shaw, Michaela invited visitors to consider the gentle thresholds between the self and the natural world.
Through an experimental process of electroforming, Michaela fuses copper with velvet and organza to create hybrid substances she calls Pelt and Gossamer. Alongside sculptural forms of reconstructed glass, these tactile and ethereal forms, evoke warmth, fragility and transformation.
A meditation on material and becoming, Familiars reflects Michaela’s ongoing exploration of how objects can act as bridges between interior and exterior worlds.
A selection of Michaela Pegum’s works, along with made-to-order pieces from her Inner Traces collection, are available to view and commission through Pieces of Eight Gallery.
