Topaz gemstones are a popular choice for jewellery, known for their variety of attractive colours, durability and symbolism. Topaz crystals exhibit a range of hues from blue and greens to yellow, orange, red, pink, and purple. One of the most important sources for high-quality topaz is Minas Gerais, Brazil where it has been mined for more than two centuries. Topaz is also found in many countries worldwide, including Pakistan, Namibia, Nigeria, Mexico, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, the USA, Australia and Russia. Imperial topaz is a rare and highly prized variety of topaz gemstone known for its rich golden to reddish-orange colour. It is primarily found in Ouro Preto, Brazil, and is often considered the most valuable and beautiful type of topaz.

    History

Topaz’s name is either derived from the Sanskrit ‘tapaz’ (fire) or from the Greek ‘topazios’. No matter the name’s origin, Topaz gemstones have been prized for their beauty and metaphysical properties for centuries. In many cultures, topaz symbolises love, friendship, and loyalty. The ancient Greeks believed it could increase one's strength and protect against enemies, while the Egyptians associated the gemstone with the sun god Ra. In Hindu mythology, topaz was considered a sacred stone that could bring the wearer wisdom and clarity. Today, topaz is often associated with creativity, confidence, and abundance. Blue topaz, in particular, is thought to enhance communication and self-expression, while yellow topaz is believed to promote positivity and optimism. Topaz is also associated with the astrological sign of Scorpio (October 23 - November 21)

    Care

Being 8 on the Moh’s scale of hardness, Topaz is considered a good gem for jewellery but should still be worn with care as it can be scratched and chipped if handled roughly. To clean your Topaz, soak in warm, soapy water and use a toothbrush to gently brush away any built up residue. High heat or sudden temperature changes can cause internal breaks in Topaz gemstones so do not use steam or ultrasonic cleaners. This birthstone’s colour is generally stable, however prolonged exposure to sunlight or heat could cause fading, especially in the yellow to brown gems.
