A Beautiful and Strange Otherness Earrings

Materials -
9ct yellow gold and baroque pearls.
Sold as one pair which are painted both sides.

These are artworks first. The hand-painted surface is delicate and will scratch or wear away if not treated carefully — please think of them as collector pieces for occasional, considered wear rather than everyday earrings.

Store each pair in its own pouch or box, separately, so the painted surfaces never rub against anything — including each other. Avoid all abrasive surfaces, chemicals and perfume, and never expose them to water.

Worn thoughtfully and stored well, they'll keep for a lifetime. They are one-of-a-kind and never to be repeated.

"In a sense, I meditated on the pearls for a few weeks, a soft sort of thought gaze. I wanted them to speak to me, to tell me what they were or what they could be. What began to emerge were both human and animal forms.

The first was a crouching, skeletal figure, the second was a four legged, long tailed lemur shaped animal. The human eye came next and I felt like the eye was me, my eye.

The title 'A Beautiful and Strange Otherness' is a quote from human ecologist Paul Shepard, which I came across whilst listening to author Francis Weller discuss the idea of communal grief. What he meant by the feeling of grief towards our natural world resonated strongly with me. It’s so hard to live with idea that our modern way of life seems to rely on the degradation of nature, but with grief comes love. In the end I want to express a deep love and curiosity for nature."
