An Artist Made Gown for 20 Years of Pieces of Eight Gallery!

Melanie Katsalidis in the ‘Neo Lace’ Gown

At Pieces of Eight, we see jewellery as personal adornment, and just as importantly, as a representation of the conversation between maker and wearer. This idea came to life in a truly special moment during our recent 20 year celebration, as our founder Melanie Katsalidis stepped out in the iconic ‘Neo Lace’ gown.

A Masterpiece of Collaboration

The Neo Lace gown is the result of an extraordinary creative union between two luminaries of the Australian design landscape: represented artist Tessa Blazey and fashion designer Alexi Freeman.

A feat of technical endurance, this gown was hand-constructed over countless collaborative sessions. Composed entirely of silver-plated chain and intricate jewellery components, it blurs the lines between couture and fine metalwork, weight and weightlessness, fashion and sculpture.

From the Museum to the Gallery

Originally created for the Powerhouse Museum International Contemporary Love Lace Award exhibition (2011-2013), the gown was inspired by Joan of Arc, and represents a significant moment in Australian design history. Having the honour of wearing it for our milestone celebration, for Melanie, felt like a full-circle moment.

"Wearing this piece was a tribute to the twenty years of creativity that have defined Pieces of Eight," Melanie reflects. "It embodies everything we stand for: conceptual thinking, expert technical skill, and the beauty of an uncompromising creative vision."

The Spirit of Pieces of Eight

In an era of fleeting trends, the Neo Lace gown serves as a reminder of the creative vision of the artists we support. It is a testament to the spirit of our gallery, where we champion the avant-garde and celebrate the makers who push the boundaries of what jewellery and art can be.

As we look toward the next twenty years, the gallery and our incredible team, remain committed to this intersection of art and design, continuing to bring you pieces that tell a story far beyond the surface.
